Unbalanced voltages are unequal voltage values on 3-phase circuits that can exist anywhere in a power distribution system. Unbalanced voltages can cause serious problems, particularly to motors and other inductive devices. Unbalanced voltages usually occur because of variations in the load.

Unsymmetrical voltage are the voltage which leads unequal currents with unequal phase shifts in a three phase system. The unsymmetrical voltage occurs in a system due to presence of an open circuit or short circuit of transmission or distribution line. It can occur either by natural disturbances or by manual errors.
