\Large\bold\star\underline{\underline\textbf{Principle\:}}

→ Optical fibre is based upon total internal reflectjon. Optical fibres consist of thousands of extremely thin and long strands of high quality glass/quartz. These long strands are coated with a thin layer of glass material of lower refractive index than the refractive index of strands. The refractive index of main fibre is nearly 1.7 and the refractive index of coating is nearly 1.5. The optical fibres can transmit light from one end to the other end due to repeated total internal reflections even if the fibre is bent or twisted.

\Large\bold\star\underline{\underline\textbf{Uses\:}}

→ Optical fibres are used to transmit light without any loss in its intensity over several kilometers.

→ Optical fibres are used to transmit the images of the objects.

→ Optical fibres are used to transmit electric signals from one place to another place.

→ Optical fibres are used in the manufacturing of medical instruments like endoscope

→ They are used in telecommunication for transmitting signals and receiving signals. A single fibre can transmit multiple signals simultaneously whereas an electric wire can transmit one signal at a time.
