As you say that valency is exchanged while forming a compound. Here O is oxygen and X is unknow element .We know that valency of O is 2. You say that the valency of X is 2 .Now we we write the given compound with their valency X2O2 .But this is wrong because we know that if the valencys of the element have common factor then we cancell out the valency.
By cancell out the valency we write the formula as XO but this wrong.
but if we take example Xcl2 then x has the valency of 2 irrespective of cl valency
Ok now take one more example in CO2 what is the valency of C.
2 since valencies get exchanged o have 1 valency here
