Hey
The formula used for writing the electronic configuration of elements after the atomic no. of 20 is SPDF formula that deals with subshells and according to it the electronic configuration of Fe will be 2,8,14,2(the Octet rule is not followed in the SPDF formula) and so its last shell will have 2 valence electrons only and so its valency is 2. But it is also found to exhibit a valeny of 3 as it possesses variable valency due to some other reasons.
