what is valency of mercury

Mercury is called Hg which is derived from a latin name . Some substances have variable valencyand mercury is one of them . there are some compounds who have variable valency and Hg is one of them! hg has a valency of +1 and +2 in +1 valency it's called mercurous and in +2 valency its called mercuric!
