First of all, what's valency?

Valency is the combining capacity of an atom. Means how many atoms, an element can lose or gain.

So first of all, we must know the atomic number of element.

Atomic number of sodium is 11.

Therefore it's electronic configuration :- 2, 8, 1

Now, the electrons present in the outermost shell of sodium is one.

Which is easy? Losing 1 electron or gaining 7 electrons (since the maximum number the last shell of an element is 8)

Obviously 1 will be easy.

So sodium will lose 1 electron. Hence it's Valency is 1.
