Valence is the number of electrons at its outermost shell or it's atomic charge, some elements have several charge like sulfur it has -2,+4,+6 and nitrogen +5,-3.the negative charge means that elements wants how many more electrons to fill it's shell like nitrogen it has -3 so it's still need 3 electrons. the positive charge means how many electrons it wants to loose like sodium it has a charge of +1 so it wants to loses its electrons.
