In ancient times society was divided into varnas' according to  competence.The society was divided into 4 Varnas. 1. The Brahmins (the intellectual class)belonged to the first class, 2. The kshatriyas( the ruling class) to the second, 3. The Vaishyas(the merchant class) to the third and 4. The Shudras (untouchables) to the last.
