Answer: Vasopressin, also called antidiuretic hormone (ADH), arginine vasopressin (AVP) or argipressin, is a hormone synthesized as a peptide prohormone in neurons in the hypothalamus, and is converted to AVP

functions-

  1. Helps in returning the tonicity of the body fluids toward normal.
  2. Vasopressin regulates the tonicity of body fluids.
  3. Causes the kidneys to reabsorb solute-free water and return it to the circulation from the tubules of the nephron.

Vasopressin is a hormone released by posterior pituitary gland ( pars nervosa ) .

It is also known as Anti-diuretic Hormone (ADH) or Pitressin.

posterior pituitary-secrete -> ADH - secrete -> kidney (nephron)

Function__

It maintains osmolality (the concentration of dissolved particles, such as salts and glucose, in the serum) and therefore maintains the volume of water in the extracellular fluid (the fluid space that surrounds cells).

Hyposecretion of ADH leads to diabetes insipidus ( diabetes cause by urine concentration ).
