Answer:

They move in and out due to the process of diffusion . Diffusion is the process of movement of solvent molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. When the concentration of water or CO2 is less outside the cell as compared to its inside , the cell take up CO2 or water inside it . This process is called endosmosis ( in case of water ) . And this type of solution is called hypotonic solution. The cell is likely to swell up if the substance is taken in and likely to shrink if the substance is sent out.
