Nitroalkanes from alkyl iodides and silver nitrite (1872), used to distinguish 1°, 2°, 3° alcohols, known as the Victor Meyer test. Discovery of nitrolic acids (with Locher in 1874). Development of a method to distinguish primary, secondary, and tertiary nitroalkanes (1875).

victor Meyer's Test.

A test used to distinguish between primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols. This test involves following steps

1.Alcohols Rxn.with P/Iodine

To form corresponding alkyl iodide.

2.RI Rxn with AgNO2.

That converts RI to corresponding RNO2(nitroalkanes)

3.RNO2 Rxn.with HN02.

To form

Primary series -Nitrolic Acid.

Sec. Series-pseudonitrole.

Tert. Series -No rxn.

4. Rxn with Aq. NaoH.

Primary -Blood Red colouration.

Sec. - Blue colouration

Tert. -colourless.

This test is also k/a Red, Blue & white test.
