Vocal chords are the present in the voice box. When we breath in the vocal chords takes air and close up and when we speak the air is released and we get our voice

Two vocal chords are stretched across the voice box in such a way that it leaves a narrow slit between the 2 vocal chords for the passage of air. When the lungs force air through the slit the vocal chords vibrate producing sound. Muscles attached to the vocal chords can make the chords tight or loose. When the chords are tight and thin , the tyoe and quality of voice is different from that when they are loose and thick.
