Hye dear,.....@@ If it's a majority government, they don't have to call an election for five years and a minority government can fall at any time. However, parliamentary seats often become vacant due to death or resignation and a "by-election" is called if a general election is not pending. Turnout in these elections is generally lower, but they often attract high profile candidates. They're also fairly unpredictable as voters use them to send a message to the current government without changing the status quo. Here in Canada, at the national level, we have anything from 1-6 in a typical year. When possible, they are all held on the same day as well.
