Wave theory of light was spread by Robert Hooke and Christiaan Huygens in the 17th  century. According to them light was composed of waves that vibrate up and down perpendicular to the direction of the light traveling. Therefore they formulated a way to visualize propagation of waves. If light was a wave certain things could be seen. Light when moving from one material to other reflects off shiny surfaces whereas while moving through slits it diffracts around objects.

Answer:

*Light is a disturbance from a source that travels as longitudinal mechanical waves through the ether medium that was presumed to pervade all space as mechanical wave requires medium for its propagation.

*The wave theory could successfully explain phenomena of reflection, refraction, interference & diffraction of light.
