White blood cells:

White blood cells (WBCs) are the cells of body's immune system. They are colourless due to the lack of haemoglobin.

  • They are nucleated and are relatively lesser in number which averages 6000-8000mm of blood.
  • They are also known as leucocytes.
  • They are generally short lived.
  • Two main categories of WBCs are granulocytes and agranulocytes.
  • WBCs are of five types :- lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils.
  • The most abundant cells (60-65 %) of the total WBCs are neutrophils.
  • Blood normally contains 1,500,00 - 3,500,00 platelets \sf mm^{-3}
  • Decrease in number of WBCs is called as Leukopenia.
  • Increase in number of WBCs is called as Leukocytosis.
