Windward side is the side of a mountain which receives most rainfall. The leeward side is the other side which receives relatively lower rainfall. This is because moisture laden winds climb along the slopes of the windward side and upon reaching higher altitudes cools down and forms clouds bringing rain to the windward side. The leeward side is also known as the 'rain shadow'
