Work Function :

The minimum energy in which the incident radiation must posses to liberate photoelectrons from a metal surface is known as work function of that surface.

  • It is denoted by the symbol \sf \Phi_{0}.

\begin{tabular}{|c |c | c| c|}\cline{1-4}\bf \underline {Metals}&\bf\underline {Wo}&\bf\underline {Metal}&\bf\underline {Wo} \\\cline{1-4}\sf Cs & \sf 2.14 & \sf Al & \sf 4.28 \\\sf K & \sf 2.30 & \sf Hg & \sf 4.49\\\sf Na &\sf 2.75& \sf Cu & \sf 4.65\\\sf Ca&\sf 3.20&\sf Ag& \sf 4.70\\\sf Mo & \sf 4.17&\sf Ni&\sf 5.15\\\sf Pb&\sf 4.25&\sf Pt& \sf 5.65\\\cline{1-4}\end{tabular}

  • Photoelectric work function is minimum for Cs.

  • Photoelectric work function is maximum for Pt.

  • Cs is best photoelectric material.

  • It depends on temprature and material.
