Work is done when a force acts on an object to cause its displacement.

Work (W) is the dot product of force (F) and displacement (s). So we can write it as

W = F . s
W = F s cos theta
where theta is the angle between F and s.

Work is done by a man when he pushes a cart and it moves through a displacement of 10m.

No work is done by us when we push a wall because the wall does not move.

Answer:

The work done by a force acting on a body is the force along the direction of the displacement multiplied by the displacement of the point of application.
