Answer :

Wurtz Reaction -

Alkyl Halide reacts with metallic Sodium in presence of dry ether to form an alkane. The above reaction is known as Wurtz Reaction.

R-X+2\:Na+X-R\longrightarrow R-R+2\:NaX

CH_3-Br+2\:Na+Br-CH_3\longrightarrow CH_3-CH_3+2\:NaBr

Limitation -

This reaction can be used for preparation of an alkane containing even number of Carbon atom.  This method can't be used for preparation of an alkane containing odd number of Carbon atom because two different Alkyl Halide are used and mixture of three are formed. Since their boiling point are close and can't be separated by fractional distillation.

The Wurtz reaction, named after Charles Adolphe Wurtz, is a coupling reaction in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and recently inorganic main group polymers, whereby two alkyl halides are reacted with sodium metal in dry ether solution to form a higher alkane.
