see Roman is a little weird in this way, but if a smaller value holder is placed before a bigger one, it is subtracted. Like V is 5, I is 1 and VI is 5+1= 6 and IV is 5-1=4.
so in this question, XLII is -10+50+1+1 (since X(10) is before L(50) ) =42.
