Answer:

Mr.Oliver was a brave and courageous man.

Explanation:

Mr.Oliver was an Anglo-Indian teacher, who used to teach in a school, located 3 miles away from Shimla. He was a bachelor and was staying alone in the premises of the school. He used to walk down every evening to the Shimla Bazaar and return after dark by taking a shortcut through the pine forest.

He was a courageous man and dd not believe in imaginary or ghost stories. So he never felt any kind of fear while walking through the pine forest at night even though sometimes the weather was windy and the pine trees made eerie and sad sounds.

Once while walking through the pine forest at night, he saw a boy sitting alone on a rock. From his school cap, he could make out that the boy was a hostel student. He was surprised to see the boy sitting alone at that time since the hostel boys were forbidden to move out after dark.

Till the time he is not aware of reality, he has concern for the boy. A moment later, the strange scene frightens him and he runs to save his life. While running from there,he bumped into a watchman, who was again featureless like the boy, he had met earlier.

  • In the story," A face in dark" Mr. Oliver is a teacher and a bachelor. He used to walk through shimla Barzaar and use to return after dark by taking a short cut through the pine forest.Oliver is told to be a courageous man, who didn't believed in ghost stories. Once he encountered a boy in the pine forest, sitting alone and sobbing.Oliver was very kind to stop and help the boy.As a teacher he showed his concern towards the boy. Once, he figured out that the boy is faceless,he was horrified and ran through the pine forest blindly calling for help. This proved that he was opposite to what was said about his courage. He stumbled up to a watchman only to find out that he was faceless too. The author has ended the Story here, without telling what might have happened to Oliver. It can also be inferred that due to living alone,Oliver might be feeling lonely and therefore, caught in the grip of some psychological fears that gave rise to these imaginary, faceless creatures, roaming in the pine forest at night. He might be hallucinated.
