Jessica is Shylock's daughter, a Jewish moneylender, in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. In the play, she elopes with Lorenzo, a poor Christian along with a chest of her father's money, eventually ending up in Bassanio' and Portia 's household.
Explanation:
- Shylock’s daughter Jessica by eloping with her love has behaved in a most un-filial manner. She has brought dishonor and disgrace to her father by running away from home; and her conduct becomes all the more reprehensible since she has run away with a Christian man while she herself is a Jew.
- However, we have to take a lenient view of Jessica’s conduct since Shylock has been behaving like a tyrannical father and because Jessica has been feeling like a prisoner in her father’s house. Shylock has never shown any tenderness or consideration towards his daughter; and she has been feeling miserable with him Therefore, there is some justification for Jessica running away from home,- although we are certainly not inclined to forgive her entirely.
