ZENER - DIODE
Zener diode is an ordinary P-N junction except it is properly doped to have a very sharp and almost vertical breakdown. It is exclusively and operated under reverse bias conditions and designed to operate in breakdown region without damage.
Zener diodes primarily depend for their working on Zener effect. For a heavily doped diode, the depletion layer is very narrow. When the reverse bias across the diode is increased, intense electric field ( =3 × 10⁷ V / m) set up across the depletion layer. It produces a large number of electron hole pairs resulting in a sharp increase in reverse current.
