Zenithal Projection can also be known as azimuthal projection.

Zenithal projection is a type of projection which uses plane as the surface of projection. This type of projection is mostly used by the United States Geological Survey(USGS).

How it works:

A point of the globe is chosen as a special point to correct the mapped distance and azimuths of any other point.

Main classifications:

  • Gnomonic projection
  • Stereographic projection
  • Orthographic projection

Major applications:

The projection helps in establishing communication with high frequency using the directional antenna or beam antenna which receives greater power from particular direction. This can be done by simply pointing the antenna in the angle that was indicated by the map where the map is already centered to the actual location of the antenna.

Zenithal map projection:

  • Zenithal Projection or Planar Projection or Azimuthal Projection shows the equidistance of earth to its center.
  • It assists in equatorial projection based on the center of the earth.
  • The projections are not accurate.

The uses are:

  • Study of astrophysics
  • Aeronautical engineering
  • Meteorological survey
  • Surveyors of land

Properties of Zenithal projections are:

  • Distance from earth’s center
  • The shape of earth-based on the projection
  • Area coverage based on azimuthal
  • Direction

Main classifications:

  • Gnomonic projection
  • Stereographic projection
  • Orthographic projection
