In any 3-dimentional figure like cuboidal, cubical, cylindrical, we talk about the lateral surface area and total surface area.

In these figure, lateral surface area means the area of the part of figure which is visible excluding area of bottom and area of top.

While,

Totle surface area means the total surface area of the given figure including top and bottom.
