Actually the meaning of Samanta is neighbors.
However, after the Gupta period, the king’s army used this as a title defining the hierarchy of their position in the army.
Samanta was the lowest rank amongst all in the army, and they were like modern-day sepoys.
The mahasamantha held a higher place than the samanthas, and they could order the samanthas to carry on specific work.
The rank and fl depended on the hierarchy.
