The Partition of Bengal in 1905 provided the flare for the rise of Extremists in the Indian National Movement. They were called extremist because they believed that success could be achieved only through bold means.

Explanation:

  • Unlike moderates, radical politicians did not believe in the fairness or sense of right and fair play of the British system. They realised that the British were motivated by egoism to exploit the wealth in India. The British were chiefly interested in the exploitation of India and so extremists didn't expect that they would take a sympathetic view of Indian common demands.  Thus pressure had to be applied make the British accept the demandsnot by prayers or sacrificing like the moderates, but by agitating against the requests publicly.
  • Extremist political ideology was the consequence of the anti-partition movement of Bengal in the Congress. When the British government refused to annul separate Bengal in the face of Bengalese mass protests that aroused sympathy with the Indian population and misled many young leaders, they were called neo-nationalists or extremists. Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal and Aurobindo Ghosh were the leading radicals. They were called radicals because they believed that only brave means could accomplish success.

Reason for the Rise of Extremism

  • The Moderates were unable to gain any noteworthy achievement except the extension by the Indian Councils Act of 1892 of the Legislative Councils.
  • The famine and plague of 1896-1997 did not open the eyes of British exploitative policies, which worsened people's economic conditions
  • Indians in South Africa suffered from colour inequality.
  • The 1904–2005 Russian-Japanese war played an important part in domestic awakening.
  • Bengal partition was carried out in Bengal in order to separate Hindus and Muslims. It was executed in 1905 by Lord Curzon, the British Viceroy of India. Since Bengal was the foundation of the Indian nationalism, this was divided by a reason: To weaken the increasing power of Bengali nationalism. Also the British wanted to show its dominance and power in India. But the partition becomes a lively colour of a true revolt in the mass movement to combat the independence that resulted in the foundation of the Boycott and Swadeshi revolution..
