According to the caste system prevalent in India :
It was believed that it was divinely ordained. It had 4 hierarchies :
1. Brahmana --- the highest in the order were said to be made from the head/mouth of brahma. Were to serve as teachers of Vedas.
2. Kshatriya --- the second among them were said to be made from the shoulders of brahma. Were to serve as the strongman of the kings.
3. Vaiahyas --- the third were said to be made from the thighs of brahma. Were to serve as merchants, traders ,carpenters, artisans etc.
4. Shudras --- the last were to serve all the other 3 castes and said to be made from the feet of Brahma.
