Elevation or altitude of a place is an important factor which influences its climate. As altitude increases the climatic conditions become colder. The highest elevations are covered with snow.

The temperature drops 4 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1000 feet rise in altitude. For example, if the average temperature at sea level is 75 degrees Fahrenheit, the average temperature at 10,000 feet would be only 35 degrees Fahrenheit. This has an impact on the plant and animal distribution.
