Answer:

A heterogeneous mixture consists of two or more phases. When oil and water are combined, they do not mix evenly, but instead form two separate layers. Each of the layers is called a phase. Oil and water do not mix, instead forming two distinct layers called phases.

The kind of mixture formed when you add oil to the coloured water is a heterogeneous mixture

  • When oil is added to the coloured water there is a formation of two layers as both oil and water are immiscible with each other.
  • Oil is less dense compared to water so it lies on the top while water is on the bottom. This is called a heterogeneous mixture because both solvents are not uniform in distribution.
  • The only way to separate the oil and water mixture is a separating funnel. Both oil and water have different densities hence can easily be separated from this method.
