Magnesium is a metal, it burns to form magnesium oxide. Sulfur burns to form sulfur dioxide

Sulphur is a non-metal. When sulphur is burned in air, it reacts with the oxygen in the air to form an acidic oxide called sulphur dioxide. Sulphur dioxide dissolves in water to form an acid called sulphurous acid, SO2.
