Don’t get me wrong, I still think that democracy is the best political regime. But just like everything it has its faults. And democracy has one major one: idea that everyone is equal. This is connected to three other ones: shortsightedness, populism and selfishness.
Idea that everyone is equal
The basic principle of democracy is that everyone is equal. Men and women, strong and weak, geniuses and morons. But that is wrong. People aren’t equal. Some are more intelligent, some are better sportsmen, some are more beautiful etc. Does it mean that the ones who are more stupid, fat or ugly should be discriminated, locked somewhere or killed? No!!! But that doesn’t change the basic premise.
Michael Phelps or Ian Thorpe are world class swimmers. Does it mean that they could be world class physicists like Stephen Hawking? No. Every person has a different set of talents. But democracy doesn’t count with this.
In democracy equal voting right is a sacred right. Whether you’re an intelligent person who gives millions to charity or a career criminal you would have 1 vote. That’s nonsense. This idea slowly turns democracy into Ochlocracywhere the mob sees that someone is rich they say “take his money.” So they take it because they are many.
