Answer:

Are they just another fancy fashion accessory or do they actually do something they where designed to do, that is keep you dry?

It is all about the amount of RAIN and what the other weather conditions are like. However, I have also seen umbrella's used to keep the burning hot sun at bay.

There are so many different types of umbrellas that there will be no way I could cover every type here in this post.

Personally, I like the big round umbrellas that you used to see the grid girls use while on the F1 grid, as they have the largest area of protection from the rain and the sun. The only draw back of these is if there is wind and rain together.

I have found that on windy rainy days it is more like Rain-Coat weather not umbrella weather as you’re going to get wet no matter what you do.

Some strange and unique umbrella designs have popped up in Japan, where the umbrella is like a babies crib covering but in clear PVC plastic. And yet another which is like having 4 umbrellas (one on each side of your body and one covering your head. Looks like this design would keep you dry, but it looked very cumbersome and impractical.

Umbrellas are banned from many sports arenas and the emergency poncho is slowly taking over at these events!

Main issue with wind and rain with umbrellas is that they tend to turn-themselves inside-out. Offering little or no protection anyway.

I hope you enjoyed my answer.
