Argentina is a South American country . The policies undertaken by the government during the mid-1800’s encouraged international immigration leading to the diverse ethnic makeup of its citizens and residents . The diversity is further reflected by the languages spoken there.


Spanish is the most spoken language of Argentin. It is widely used by government offices, in the educational system, and by the mainstream media.


Italian is closely followed language after Spanish in Argentina. The large Italian-speaking community is the result of huge immigration that began in the 19th century, mainly because of the economic problems in Italy.


Levantine Arabic comes third most widely spoken language because of the immigrants from mainly Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine .


Other languages spoken include: Quechua , German , Yiddish , Guaraní , Catala, Mapudungun . Amongst these Quechua, Guaraní, and Mapudungun are indigenous languages.


Several other languages are spoken by smaller populations which include Chinese, Japanese, Welsh, and several indigenous languages
