Tipu Sultan's death can be attributed to Mir Sadiq's betrayal, who was one of Tipu's most trusted aide.

When the 4th Anglo Mysore war broke off, the british who allied with the Marathas and Nizams attacked Srirangapatna. According to Wikipedia Mir Sadiq a general in Tipu's army had turned a traitor as he was lured by the British.

Mir Sadiq pulled a bigger chunk of the Mysorean army during the most crucial part of the siege from the battlefield to collect their salaries. This weakened the defence and led to a breach in the fort of Srirangapatna.

The news reached Tipu who was engaged in another front. He rushed to the breached wall, but it was too late. Wikipedia states in Fourth Anglo-Mysore War article that, Tipu was shot and killed in the evening of 4th May 1799.

Since, it was dusk the sunlight had faded away. The British were unsure of Tipu's death. They dispatched a party of men to search the battlefield for Tipu's body, which was eventually found. A history note mentions that, the arrival of royal mourners at Tipu's palace confirmed the fact for the British, who intensified their search for the body.
