Causes of subsistence crisis are :

(i) Population of France increases from

23 million to 28 million.

(ii) This led to Rapid increase in

demand for food grain.

(iii) Production of grains could not keep

pace with demand. So the price of

bread which was stable diet of

majority rose rapidly.

(iv) The owners of labourers were fixed

their wages. But wages didn't keep

pace with price of bread.

(v) Although drought and hail reduced the harvest.
