The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878 under the rule of the Governor-Generalship and Vice royalty of Lord Lytton, for greater control of Indian vernacular newspapers. Colonial government passes the vernacular press act in 1887 because nationalists in India utilized print media to advertise the evil effects of British rule and desired to spread new ideas of liberty.

As a result of vernacular press, act government obtained rights to interfere with censor reports and articles in the local language press. The government began to keep consistent track on local newspapers. If these newspaper published any material which was supposed to be violent, the government seized the press and will confiscate the printing machines.
