The origin of the Sri Lankan war lie in the continues political rancor between the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamils. The roots of the modern conflict lie the British colonial rule when the country was known as Ceylon .

I m giving answer in brief..
here it goes...
in Sri Lanka , there were two communities ,i.e, sinhalas and Tamils ....in Sri Lanka there was majority of Sinhala speakers .....and in every field they were given privileges based on majority.....in university , in schools and in every field they were given priorities......Also the Constitution has announced that the people of Sri Lanka should foster Buddhism.....
this all raged the Tamils...it had created a feeling of allienation among the Tamils bcz sinhalas were given priorities....Tamils demanded a separate Tamil state and demanded for Tamil to be the official language......
this lead to civil war...
