Dutch is the official language of the Flemish Community and the Flemish Region (merged to Flanders) and, along with French, an official language of the Brussels-Capital Region. The main Dutch dialects spoken in Belgium are Brabantian, West Flemish, East Flemish and Limburgish.

The minority French speaking community was relatively rich and powerful .This was resented by Dutch speaking community who got the benifit of education and economic development much later . This led to tensions between the Dutch speaking community during the 1950s and 1960s .
