There are many causes for the revolt of 1857.The main cause was the introduction of Newenfield riffle cartriges.The top of the cartiges was to be opened by the mouth before loading it to the riffle.The cardiges were greased by fats of pig and cow. The Indian soldiers believed that british was trying to spoil the both relegions,Hindus and Muslims,that the Hindus revered the cow and Muslims hated the pig. so, the Indians started to revolt against the british.

The policies of sudsdiary alliance,doctrine of lapse,effect control created discontent among people.
