The sonnet 'Not Marble,nor the Gilded Monuments' piognantly highlights Shakespeare's love for poetry and hatred for the destructive nature of war.The poet wants to convey the message that monuments and statues are overturned by the forces of time,nature and human behaviour but words go on living in the hearts of people.He says that war is nothing but wasteful evil.Time tarnishes the gilded monuments but the lustre of one's memory preserved in poetry keeps shining till the Day of Judgement.As such,words are immune to physical destruction.
