Helen's father and Miss Sullivan helped to develop her interest in nature. Miss Sullivan would take her outdoors to teach. After the incident of climbing the tree, and when she was caught in a storm, she realized that nature could be benevolent as well as dangerous. She had a bad experience in the ocean but she learnt swimming. Her experiences with nature helped her to become more confident.
