The hinges on the door squeaked as I stepped inside. The kitchen was devoid of furniture, the countertops bare. Sunlight pouring through the window revealed the dust that covered everything.

It had been more than two years since I had lived in this old house. My sister Laura and I once chased one another through the halls, torturing each other like sisters tend to do. My mother would often keep herself busy at the kitchen, sending delightful aromas through the house. And then, in what seemed like an instant, our world came crashing down around us.
