What made the doctor utter “Death lurked four inches away” ?

The author here had no hint of the snake till it fell on him wriggled around the authors hand . His turning back on hearing a thud and the snake form a hoot were very simultaneous. The snake was hardly a feet away from the author ,so much so that he could even get no time to shield or cry . Thus he said death lurked four inches away from him
