Shylock was jealous of Antonio and Antonio could not not repay the 3000 ducats which he had borrowed from Shylock for his friend Bassanio on time and Shylock was waiting for a chance  to take revenge on Antonio because Antonio called shylock a cut-throat dog, Antonio spat on Shylock's cloak,Antonio pulled Shylock's beard that is why shylock demanded a pound of Antonio's flesh.
