Following inhalation, nitrous oxide is transported in the bloodstream and readily passes through the blood-brain barrier. It acts upon several neural receptors as an agonist or antagonist, depending on the type of receptor, which in turn produces effects that include: muscle relaxation, sedation, mild hallucinations, and (most importantly) anesthesia. Quoting from the drugs forum regarding nitrous oxide's action on the nACh receptor: "Inhibits acetylcholine from acting on its receptor. Acetylcholine is responsible for activating muscles, therefore inhibiting its receptor produces a muscle relaxant effect."
