What makes ships float on water but iron nail sink.

Larger surface area of ship makes it float on water as larger surface are means large buoyant force(It is the force exerted by water molecules from the bottom. This force is exerted upon a material present on the water).Since iron nail has small surface area therefore small buoyant force is exerted And thus iron nail sinks.
