what makes us called the uprising of 1857 the 'first war of independence'?

It is called so because we just fighted as if the Britishers had completely conquered us...as if they had completely taken our freedom...we fought as if the Britishers had completely divided India...

We fought with Britishers even before the revolt....but nothing of this had happened....
As a result the war was known as 'The First War of Independence'
