The chapter gives us a message that boasting about one's knowledge is bad. Despite so many good qualities, Private Quelch could not win the admiration of his superior officers and colleagues due to his outspoken attitude. He was a proud and overconfident fellow. He used to show off his knowledge. This habit brought his downfall. He lectured his colleagues on every aspect of human knowledge and embarrassed them for their smallest mistakes. Therefore, when he was chosen for cookhouse duties instead of some higher rank duty, he became a laughing stock for every one.
