The message that the poet conveys through the poem "a tragic story" is that we should not be vain of our beauty. Instead of focussing on our beauty we should use our god - gifted brains in more important things. The sage was supposed to be a very intelligent person but was so foolish that he tried to accomplish an impossible task as changing the position of his pigtail by various ways. So, we should not be foolish as the sage but be sensible enough to differentiate between important and unimportant issues
